Pepper Rasam is a simple dish to make and you can do it within 15 minutes.It is a great remedy for cold and sore throat.Pepper rasam with hot rice on a chill day will make you feel so good.You can even have this as a hot soup.
Ingredients
Ripe Tomato -1 big
Tamarind - small gooseberry sized ball
Whole black pepper - 1 tbsp
Cumin seeds/Jeera seeds -1 tbsp
Garlic - 4 pods
Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
Rasam powder -1 tsp
hing-1 tsp
Curry leaves - few
Salt - as needed
oil - 3 tsp
Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
cumin seeds-1 tsp
Fenugreek seeds-1/2tsp
Red chilli - 2
Curry leaves - few
Coriander leaves - finely chopped

To Temper
oil - 3 tsp
Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
cumin seeds-1 tsp
Fenugreek seeds-1/2tsp
Red chilli - 2
Curry leaves - few
To Garnish
Coriander leaves - finely chopped
Method
- Crush Pepper,Cumin,curry leaves and garlic in a blender or mortar and pestle.
- Prepare tamarind pulp.If you are using tamarind pulp, just dissolve that in water. But if you are using tamarind fruit, soak it in warm water for few mins and then squeeze the pulp and strain the water.
- Mash the Ripe tomato with your hands.
- Heat oil in a pan. Add in mustard,cumin seeds,Fenugreek seeds,Red chilli and few curry leaves and saute for a min.
- Now add in the crushed masala and saute for a min.
- Add the mashed tomato and boil for few minutes until raw smell of tomato goes.
- Add in Turmeric powder and rasam powder .
- Pour in tamarind juice, required salt and water.
- Add a handful of coriander leaves.
- Add in hing.
- Dont boil the rasam.Just allow the rasam to froth on the top.Once its starts to froth switch of the flame
- Cover with a lid and serve it plain or accompanied with rice, sambar and a side vegetable south indian dish.
Notes
- If you like,you can add ghee instead of oil.It will increase the flavor and taste of rasam.
